Training is one of the best ways to strengthen the bond with your dog—not just because it helps teach good manners, but because it builds trust, communication, and teamwork between you and your pup. Whether you’re working on basic cues like “sit” and “stay,” or trying out new tricks, training can (and should!) be a fun and rewarding experience for both of you. The good news? You don’t need to be a professional trainer to see great results. With a few simple strategies, you can make your sessions more effective, more enjoyable, and more connected.
Here are some bite-sized tips to help you and your dog get the most out of training time!
1. Reward good behavior
When your dog is doing something you like- sitting, laying and chewing their bone quietly, going in their crate, etc, make sure to reward it with praise and treats. Oftentimes people focus on changing the wanted behaviors but forget to reward when they're doing good. Remember - What gets rewarded gets repeated.
2. Train at different locations
Dogs don’t generalize well. Whenever teaching a new behavior, try to train it at at least 5 different locations to really cement the new skill. It could be in different rooms at home, backyard, sidewalk, pet friendly stores, a hiking trail, etc.
3. Keep it short and sweet
10 minutes a couple times a day rather than an hour long session. End everything with a success, even if it means simply asking for a “sit”. This helps them build confidence and look forward to the next session with you.
With just a little consistency, encouragement, and the right mindset, you can make a big difference in your dog’s learning and confidence, while having fun together. Remember, every moment is a chance to connect and grow as a team. So grab a handful of treats, keep sessions light and positive, and enjoy the journey!
Happy training,
