Did you know canine enrichment is more than just puzzle toys and DIY games?
Canine enrichment refers to activities and experiences that stimulate a dog’s natural instincts, keep them mentally and physically active, and enhance their overall well-being. It can prevent boredom, reduce stress, and help address behavioral issues.
Here are 5 types of canine enrichment, and each one fulfills parts of their instincts:
1. Social: Social enrichment refers to contact with dogs, people, and other species.
Example activities include: doggie playdates, visiting dog friendly cafe, or people (or squirrel) watching at the park.
2. Nutritional: Refers to food based enrichment utilizing their scavenging and foraging instincts.
Example activities include: using a snuffle mat to sniff out food, a lick mat, or a frozen kong with yummy ingredients.
3. Occupational: Refers to giving them a “job” to do and connecting them with breed traits.
Example activities include: attending training classes, or dog sports like scentwork, obedience, herding, agility, etc.
4. Sensory: Refers to stimulating a dog’s senses including smell, sound, texture, and taste.
Example activities include: a car ride with windows down, walking on a new surface, listening to music, introducing them to a new scent like lavender or vanilla
5. Physical: Refers to the opportunities for them to run, jump, chase & play.
Example activities include: playing with them, agility course, go on a hike or swim
In fact, most of the examples above fulfill more than one type of enrichment category. By prioritizing enrichment, we can help our pups lead happy, healthy, and well-balanced lives.
